Student Voice:? A Summer in Rural Akita – Jude Atkinson, Oregon State University, U.S.A.

Jude Atkinson, Oregon State University, participated in the short-term program in the summer of 2025. We would like to share his experience at AIU.

While many travelers are drawn to the city lights, I’ve always been more captivated by the outdoors. This summer, I followed that passion to Akita International University and discovered just how delightful Japan’s countryside can be.

AIU is a small school, but its size only adds to its charm. The students I’ve met, whether from Japan, the U.S., South Korea, Australia, or beyond, have been incredibly welcoming. There is a strong sense of community on campus that feels truly special.

The natural beauty of rural Japan is on full display in Akita, where mountains and forests meet the sea. Far from the tourist crowds of Tokyo, authenticity is never in question. Walking the streets of Akita City, many residents are kind enough to say “konnichiwa.” The remote beauty of a place like Akita inspires kindness wherever you go.

Akita has constantly serenaded me throughout my stay. I’ve enjoyed impromptu little piano concerts in the cafeteria, jammed out at AIU Rock Band Club performances, and drifted to sleep to the gentle hum of evening cicadas. I will carry not only the sights of beautiful Akita with me, but also its sounds.

As for the program itself, I found my classes highly engaging. There was plenty of space for open discussion and many learning activities. Most meaningful, though, were the cultural activities and field trips. Experiencing Akita firsthand was an absolute joy.

My very dearest places at AIU and in Akita include Kakunodate, the Oga Peninsula, Akita Station, Camellia Bar, Nakajima Library, Senshu Park, and of course the life-saving Aeon Shopping Mall. I’ll miss these places dearly and hope to return someday.

Thank you to all the teachers, students, volunteers, administrators, and staff who made my summer in Akita so special.
